BOSTON -- Whether people are filling up their cars at the pump or their carts at the supermarket, rising prices have many feeling the economic pinch.

Consumers Feel Economic Pinch

"It is not good out there," said Kevin Burke, an appliance salesman. "They will go without. They will go without one burner on a stove because they have three others."

NewsCenter 5's Jorge Quiroga reported that food prices have jumped about 40 percent in the last year.................

There's been an increase at the farmers market too, but unlike in so many areas, I haven't yet seen a decrease in quality.

I am starting to notice a rise in prices at the supermarket as well.

Prices were quite steady here in Canada over the past few years when our dollar was gaining value on the USD but since last fall the CAD has been moving pretty much in tandem with the USD and since then prices have definitely gone up here too.

:rolleyes_m: I was at Lowe's and Home Depot yesterday buying tomato plants and other garden goodies.

The checkout lady at Lowe's said business in the garden department was the worst she had saw it in years...no usual spring rush of buyers this year.

Apparently rising food prices doesn't equate with actually getting serious and planting your own garden.
Even planting a couple of tomato plants and cucumbers in big flowerpots is making an effort in my opinion;but even that may be too much for the average J6P/Yuppie crowd.
They had rather bitch about grocery prices than get their hands dirty.

I wonder what their attitude will be when December comes this year ?

It just goes to show you how screwed the average person is gonna be when things start to get really bad.

Everybody thinks that growing a good crop of vegetables is easy. If things get really bad all you have to do is plant a few seeds right?

I pay close attention to prices at the store. Every time I go to Costco, I buy one of those whole cooked chickens. For years they were $4.99. Went up to $5.99 about 6 or 8 months ago. Last week, $6.49. That's just one item. Everything else is goin up as well. Especially Dairy.

I think those numbers are about right.

I'd say half of the 40% is due to the reduced value of the little green pieces of paper we are forced to use to buy these things. So it takes a lot more FRNs to buy the same thing.

The other half is due to increased worldwide demand for food and commodities. Supply can't keep up with the added demand.

Yawn...

We will never run out of groceries. As prices rise, demand will drop, and people will use less groceries.

If people simply worked harder, they wouldn't have to worry about such minor market fluctuations.

WalMart still sells theirs for $4+. I buy one a week. Can't beat the price.
